Dromen van sugIRA - REDESIGN
For my graduation project I worked together with Uitgeverij Wilde Haren. They wanted to pitch an animated short for the soon to be translated graphic novel ‘Dromen van Sugira’ (Sugira’s Dream). For the short they asked me to write a script based on the GN and redesign the three children in order to differentiate them better from one another.
ABOUT THE STORY
Dromen van Sugira/Sugira’s Dream is about Sugira. A stubborn little girl living in Rwanda. She loves sweets but she hates brushing her teeth. When her friends notice the strong smell coming from her mouth, they stop playing with her. That night, while feeling all alone, Sugira has a dream she will never forget and an adventure that will change everything.
ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
SUGIRA
Sugira is the main character. She is someone who is very stubborn and does what she wants. Despite what the consequences might be. This is based on the fact that she always begs her mother for candy and never brushes her teeth when asked. That’s why her shape is more square. Which fits characters who not only feel strong, but who can also be difficult to move.
KEZA
Keza is Sugira’s friend. She seems like someone who is not afraid to speak her mind and is known to make sharp remarks. Based on the fact that she immediately commented on something being smelly around Sugira, without regard for the feelings of her friend. That’s why her shape is triangular. Which fits characters who seem a bit more menacing or who are intellectually sharp.
KAGABO
Kagabo is Keza’s little brother. He is someone who is a bit more upbeat and cheerful, but also very cautious. Based on the interaction he had with his teacher. Where he was the first to flee when she came to get all the children back to class. That is why his shapes are more round. Which fits characters who seem very welcoming and kind.
